Guyanne Sinon – University College London (UCL),  BSc Social Sciences

Guyanne on commercial awareness: Most definitions of commercial awareness that I come across refer to the need to keep up to date on financial, commercial and political news stories. I would take this one step further by saying, being commercially aware is about knowing how those new stories impact your professional and personal life.

Guyanne on the benefits of BeComAware: BeComAware is a new initiative that aims to, not only provide essential resources and information on commercial awareness but, facilitate discussions on how commercial awareness can be applied to understand or solve real-world problems.

By explaining businesses practices and jargon, BeComAware can give students the confidence to begin their careers in commercial sectors.

Victoria Wilson – Keele University, LLB Law

Victoria on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware is a platform to help students have easy access to resources which can improve their commercial awareness, to aid them in the future.

Joseph Spiby – University of Nottingham, LLB Law

Being commercially aware means having an understanding of how business and industries relevant to my desired profession function, and what they need to be successful.

Joseph on the benefits of BeComAware:

Kyla Entena – City University, LLB Law

Kyla on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness is vital in whatever sector you want to specialise in the future.

Kyla on the benefits of BeComAware:

I believe BeComAware is the new solution and platform to resolve this problem that students like me experience on a day-to-day basis.

Commercial awareness is more than just understanding it because you want to work in a big commercial City law firm. Commercial awareness is vital in whatever sector you want to specialise in the future. What happens commercially was affected by the government. What happens commercially will affect the way workers and ordinary people function and so on. There is no denial that a lot of legal blogger on Instagram helps student like me to be commercially aware, but there is no denial that these sources can be overwhelming because they are written in commercial languages that some students don’t understand. And I believe this vital information will lose their purpose if we do not simplify it to a more universal language or explanation. I believe BeComAware is the new solution and platform to resolve this problem that students like me experience on a day-to-day basis.

Karla Elliott – London South Bank University,  LLB Law

Karla on commercial awareness: To me, commercial awareness is keeping up with international affairs, the ‘goings on in the world’ which effect how a law firm operates alongside its clients.

Karla on the benefits of BeComAware: BeComAware is a growing platform used to help students develop commercial awareness; with an instagram page full of small chunks of information and a website to follow. Law is a very competitive field and students are constantly reminded on the importance of being commercially aware in order to be successful, but are not given any real means of support in doing so. There are so many pressures that a student must keep up with and BeComAware is an opportunity to take away some of that pressure by shining the light on commercial awareness.

With the help of BeComAware, students have a chance to gain a genuine understanding of commercial awareness and build the foundations, then they may be able to read the Financial Times or another newsprint and actually understand it.

Personally, I have been told many a times “keep up with the news” and have struggled because I wasn’t sure on what exactly I’m keeping up with, where to look for it and understanding the content I was reading. Had there have been a platform such as BeComAware available to me from the start of my law degree, I would have greater commercial awareness and would be much more confident applying to legal roles. BeComAware has great potential in genuinely helping students and taking away the fear of not being able to keep up with the times.

BeComAware turns the minefield of complex terminology into simple terms allowing complete beginners to understand it.

BeComAware is an online resource for students of numerous disciplines to be able to access a wealth of simplified information regarding the commercial world.

Maryanne Sanyaolu – Law at Arden University and BA (Hons) International Business Management at Kingson University

Maryanne on commercial awareness:

Commercial terms and jargon are not often highlighted in everyday news, but it is necessary to have an understanding of what they mean to understand the key success of a business.

Commercial awareness is also understanding the different terms and languages used in the business world and being able to simplify the meaning.

Maryanne on the benefits of BeComAware:

Helping other people understand business terms and jargon often used in the commercial sector. Such as KPI (key performance indicator) SLA (service level agreement) etc and bringing these terms to an audience who have great interest in gaining commercial awareness. Some of the terms and jargons are not often used or highlighted in everyday news but it is necessary to have an understanding of what they mean to understand the key success of a business.

Amiya Doabia – Durham University, LLB Law

Amiya on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness is the understanding of how businesses function, the financial market and its impact on firms and companies.

Amiya on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware to be a platform that delivers commercial awareness news items in a quick, easy accessible and effective manner. Students often do not have the patience or time in their busy academic schedule to read long articles or newspapers. Thus, ‘bitesized’ information is an ideal way for students to increase their commercial awareness in a time effective manner.

Amiya Doabia

Dylan Levy – University of Reading, LLB Law

Dylan on commercial awareness:

Most students upon entering university have no idea what commercial awareness is and how important it is when applying for a majority of graduate jobs.

Commercial awareness is more than just being business minded. It is about understanding how different markets work and how the world (people) revolve around this.

Dylan on the benefits of BeComAware:

With BeComAware students will get the opportunity to develop a critical skill. Ambassadors gain a sense of professionalism whilst enhancing their commercial awareness and employability.

Dylan Levy

Chloe Cooke – University of Ulster, LLB Law

Chloe on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness is not taught in university, and many students are lead to believe that to be commercially aware is to read the headline on the front of the economist newspaper every day.

Students need a deeper level of understanding of the commercial world so that when pressed for information in an interview/application we can be confident in our understanding of the topics.

Commercial awareness is about knowing more that just the black letter law, it is about being able to apply the most up to date and accurate information on the economy, business and commerce along with a knowledge of law to clients in order to tailor the legal advice we are offering them to best suit their business and the current socio-economic climate, whilst always looking ahead and preempting trends in commerce to ensure all legal advice is the most beneficial to a business in the constantly changing business world.

Chloe on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware is an amazing platform that brings together the most up to date commercial headlines in a way that is easily understood by students at all levels, by breaking down legal jargon and ensuring students gain a deeper level of understanding of commercial awareness. Commercial awareness is not taught in university, and many students are lead to believe that to be commercially aware is to read the headline on the front of the economist newspaper every day. This is so far from true, and students need a deeper level of understanding of the commercial world so that when pressed for information in an interview/application we can be confident in our understanding of the topics.

Eleanor Barnett – King’s College London, BSc Politics, Philosophy and Economics

Eleanor on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness means a greater understanding of society, and I personally find it particularly relevant for my degree and my legal career aspirations, so I appreciate the different areas/careers that commercial awareness directly affects.

Eleanor on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware is a platform that will allow commercial awareness (a key skill for career interviews and life in general!) to be accessible to more people, particularly younger people like students who haven’t been taught the complicated business jargon used in publications like the Financial Times regarding commercial awareness.

This is valuable to students because it will allow them to engage more with material, so that in interviews/applications they can give their opinions on commercial awareness/current issues, and display an understanding of how these affect their chosen career/firm (particularly in legal, business, financial, consultancy, or political/public sector careers) rather than being caught out for regurgitating the news but not understanding the actual issue.

Eleanor Barnett

Hope Turner – University of Kent

Hope on commercial awareness:

It is no good being told to read certain news sites if they are not written to be able to be understood by students.

For me commercial Awareness is the understanding of business and law in today’s society. It comes down to being aware of the changes and developments of the world and how that can effect everything else. It’s not only an overview but an interest in how, with society changes comes developments in the legal sector and in everything else.

Hope on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware enables students to become competent in gaining commercial Awareness easier at an earlier stage by sharing vital knowledge and information which is far more comprehensive and engaging.

BeComAware aim to provide commercial awareness education to students which is easily understood and digested. It is no good being told to read certain news sites if they are not written to be able to be understood by students. Therefore BeComAware enables students to become competent in gaining commercial Awareness easier at an earlier stage by sharing vital knowledge and information which is far more comprehensive and engaging. Not only does it help students understand but it helps to engage students interests by starting conversations which involve them rather than exclude them.

Jasmin Guy – Leeds Beckett University, LLM Law

Jasmin on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness is to me less of an awareness but more of a mindset; using knowledge and understanding of the commercial world to think about current events and trends in a multi-faceted way; exploring how different parts of society and business will be affected, from supply chains to consumer demand and many other areas.

Jasmin on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware adds value to students as its approach does not presuppose prior knowledge or understanding.

BeComAware is a unique initiative which aims to equip students with the underlying background knowledge that will enable them to develop substantial, not just superficial, commercial awareness. I think BeComAware adds value to students as its approach does not presuppose prior knowledge or understanding, merely curiosity and willingness to learn. I know from my own experience that students can sometimes be intimidated by the fact they have never had exposure to the business world. The content-approach of BeComAware has the potential to instill this understanding which students can then build on confidently.

Jasmin Guy

Lily Osborne – Canterbury Christ Church University, Psychology

Lily on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness is not just a box that you can tick.

Lily on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware is a platform which can build and enhance students commercial awareness, in such a way that the information is digestible and not overwhelming. I feel that BeComAware will be of an incredibly high benefit for students in terms of learning the language of commercial awareness and providing information that does not seem intimidating, like much other commercial awareness information does to many students.

I think that the platform will be especially beneficial due to the skills of commercial awareness not being taught to students at university, and students often being left to their own devices to learn and understand such an essential skill for interviews and future job prospects.

Lily Osborne

Merve Dogan – York University (Canada), Psychology

Merve on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness is understanding and connecting how businesses and companies work including the way it changes and develops, and acknowledging the ripple effect it can have an other companies.

Merve on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware is a platform to educate students on commercial awareness and use it to their advantage. I think this would be very beneficial since a lot of students seem to be lacking knowledge of commercial awareness. It can help students of various specialties since it is a topic that relates to not only business but most other sectors as well such as law.

Harleen Kaur Dhillon- University of York, LLB Law

Harleen on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness is an important element in understanding how businesses work and function, however this is not just restricted to businesses. I understand that commercial awareness is so important within the legal market, especially in understanding a client’s needs. To me, commercial awareness is integral to not only developing within a profession, but also as an individual; it provides you with a different outlook on the world and is intellectually stimulating to learn more about the mechanisms behind a business.

Harleen on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware is a learning platform which breaks down ‘commercial awareness’ into easy, more accessible and engaging segments for students. Through teaching, BeComAware provides guidance for students on how to advance their commercial awareness and feel confident when applying for jobs or opportunities. Offering resources and educating students first-hand will provide a foundation in which students can start to expand their commercial knowledge and apply it appropriately in situations. BeComAware will also equip individuals to engage with the content externally, whether this is in recruitment, education or in their personal development.

Harleen Kaur

Lilli Matthews – University of Kent, LLB Law

Lilli on commercial awareness:

Commercial Awareness is about developing another mindset that revolves around the business industry. I say mindset because many institutions try to filter Commercial Awareness as a tick box, by making such a broad element of law and business so narrow.

Approaching Commercial Awareness as a mindset releases the pressure of understanding it as just another piece of ‘revision’ and instead it allows you to form an understanding of Commercial Awareness over time by implementing it into your daily routine.

Furthermore, Commercial Awareness to me is about questioning how and why certain issues are happening in the business world and how can this be transferred onto the day to day run-ins of a solicitor. By questioning why and how issues are happening it allows me to understand the actual issue at hand in more depth.

Lilli on the benefits of BeComAware:

To me, BeComAware is simply to teach Commercial Awareness. BeComAware is different to other Commercial Awareness platforms because it educates students on the jargon that is used throughout the business world. This can add value for students because it is teaching them the terms, an understanding of topics such as deflation and using this information to formulate an understanding of the current issues that affect the business industry.

BeComAware is a content-based platform rather than writing solely about current issues. This is valuable to students because they can use the content from BeComAware to develop and improve their understanding of Commercial Awareness and use what they have learnt through this platform to understand the jargon when reading the Financial Times.

BeComAware offers an array of information and help, specifically sharing information on how to display Commercial Awareness throughout the recruitment process. Again, this will be crucial for students, as it will help prepare them for the outside business world and how to successfully display their understanding of Commercial Awareness.

Finally, I believe BeComAware to be a supportive, close-knit and evolving platform that is a guaranteed place to come for digestive bites of Commercial Awareness. The fact that BeComAware is founded by a previous Law student and current Trainee-Solicitor will help benefit students as they will be able to appreciate Sibel’s experience and perhaps relate to her story and many others about the struggles of Commercial Awareness, thus making BeComAware the platform to turn to when in need of clarification.

Kavita Ubhi – University of Law, LLB Law

Kavita on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness is a combination of a mindset and a habit that is developed overtime. It’s the understanding of both the internal and external environments in which a business operates.

Kavita on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware is designed to enhance student awareness on the commercial aspects of the business world by providing statistics, facts, commercial insights and the commercial language. I believe that BeComAware will be of value to students, because it will allow them to develop a commercially sensitive manner, which will shape them into becoming trusted business advisors who acquire sufficient knowledge and acumen. In addition to this, students will form and display self-confidence in their own knowledge of commercial awareness due to BeComAware, thus instilling confidence in their employers and their future clients.

Sam Skelton – University of Liverpool, LLB Law

Sam on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness involves being on the ball all the time; watching the news and reading sites like The Economist and The Financial Times so as to always have an understanding of what is taking place in the current global market. Staying up to date and being inquisitive with the constant stream of news exposes you to new technical terms and always gives you an opportunity to learn.

Sam on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware can help students as commercial awareness is an essential trait for the modern lawyer. A solicitor is no longer expected to simply be a bank of legal knowledge but be able to understand current trends and markets so they can effectively and efficiently advise clients.

Sam Skelton

Muntaha Rahman – Swansea University, LLB Law

Muntaha on commercial awareness:

As a law student, it’s easy to become overwhelmed on trying to work out the best ways of gaining commercial awareness, with the frequent advice just simply being to read newspapers.

Muntaha on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware is a platform that allows a deeper insight into being commercially aware, by providing easy to understand bite size looks into essential commercial knowledge.

Surabhi Agashe – University of Bristol

Surabhi on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness is recognising the objectives of a business, one’s clients and what sectors they operate in. The second part is the understanding of one’s role and how one can assist the business/one’s client to achieve their commercial objective and mitigate risk.

‘Commercial’ and ‘awareness’ put together entails the ability to translate one’s commercial knowledge to specific legal advice in order to meet one’s clients’ commercial objectives. Commercial awareness is a journey and not a destination. No-one has 0% commercial awareness nor 100%.

Surabhi on the benefits of BeComAware:

BeComAware is a comprehensive hub and educational platform for bitesize commercial information. Not only does the organisation equip law students with commercial skills but rather anyone who is on the lookout for developing his/her acumen. I find BeComAware, in particular, to be successful among its counterparts due to its holistic approach. It not only provides key news stories but also the teaching of commercial language, enhancing a person’s understanding of the business world, commercial insights and legal jargon.

Furthermore, in my opinion, the newsletter and the 2021 Commercial Awareness Calendar is of extreme value and knowledge to equip budding legal and business minds with the skills needed to be a trainee lawyer or a business professional.

Surabhi Agashe

Fahima Begum – University of Law, LLB Law

Fahima on commercial awareness:

Commercial Awareness doesn’t just mean keeping up to date with current affairs. Commercial Awareness is about digging deeper

Fahima on the benefits of BeComAware:

Commercial Awareness doesn’t just mean keeping up to date with current affairs but is also about the turnover of businesses, analysing and understanding how they work. I can never pass a shop without thinking ‘whats the overturn of this shop’. I’m always keen to dig in and know more about things than just the basis of it.

BeComAware is to teach students commercial awareness and the importance of it in their careers. I feel it can add value to those students who don’t fully know and understand what it means to be commercially aware and how to actually become commercially aware.

Fahima Begum

Habiba Galal – University of Greenwich, LLB Law

Habiba on commercial awareness:

Commercial awareness had always been something I struggled to keep up with, as the only sources I was provided with were seminars and podcasts, which usually used language I didn’t understand and didn’t revolve around actual commercial awareness.

Habiba on the benefits of BeComAware:

As BeComAware is not only for practicing lawyers but also student focused, I feel that it will tackle commercial awareness in a way students will understand and help both lawyers, law students and non-law students to keep up with current events in a way that benefits them. BeComAware will also provide another platform for those in the profession who may struggle with commercial awareness.

Habiba Galal

Shania Sarkar – Sixth form

Shania on commercial awareness:

To me, commercial awareness is the act of being informed about the business world, and when applied to law, could mean understanding the client’s that law firms work with, as well as relating it to the legal industry.

Shania on the benefits of BeComAware:

Becomaware is a platform designed to help students become more commercially aware, which is essential in the commercial law industry. I feel it adds value mainly because it is a free platform, allowing more and more people to have access to it, it helps disadvantaged and minority students who otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do so. It is also an exciting platform in itself, helping students and people in the legal world become more commercially aware.

Shania Sarkar
